Copic Club January 08 Tutorial

by Joanne Basile

I was so fortunate to attend a Copic coloring session at CHA, and I spent a LOT of time stalking the booth during the show, so I have a few tricks to share with you all this month.

I've used only three colors from this month's assortment for the card I'm about to share for you. Red, black and soft shadow.  I also used the Colorless Blender and Skin white from past months, both of which canbe specially ordered for you through Christie if they aren't already available in the Paper Pretties Boutique.

Step 1To begin, I colored in Wade's face with my skin white Copic Marker.  The folks at Copic taught us to always work in a circle... not sure why, but this does seem to eliminate any stripes/streaking that you may otherwise notice.  Then I colored in portions of his shoe and the edges of his top hat with my black Copic marker.

Step 2To obtain the grey shades, I applied ink from my black marker onto the tip of my colorless blender (before you panic, don't worry, it will not permanently stain the blender!!)

Step 3Then, I use the colorless blender, coated with the black ink, to create a grayscale version of that black marker to create lighter images.  I used that grey on the spots on his coat, as well as on portions of Wade's shoes, and on his cane.  I also colored in the balance of his top hat with the black on blender as well.

Then, to blend the black with the grey on the hat, I worked with my blender pen in circles blending the grey into the black.

When you are finished, simply color off all of the ink on the marker onto a piece of scratch paper, returning the marker to a clear coloreless blender.

Now, while coloring the hat, I noticed that a bit of ink did in fact, seep past the lines and outside the edge of that hat.  No worries!  Copic Colorless Blender to the rescue!  I worked just that little touch of color with my blender and blended it right out.  Mistake corrected!! Card saved!!

Step 4I did the same for the Red. I colored in Wade's coat with the full strength red, then colored in his vest with the colorless blender coated with red ink. I also used the blender to "minus" color from portions of his red coat to create shadow and tone.

After I put together the full card, I decided Wade needed just a touch more...

I used the Soft Shadow from this month's selection to place a very faint, very thin line of marker all around his perimeter and under his feet as well. This gives him just a bit of definition off the white page and helps him to "pop" off the page a little more.  In any instance that it is too bright, you can soften that edge with your colorless blender. You can't see it very well here, but in real life it does create just a soft subtle shadow that defines the image quite nicely. Give it a try!!

FinalSo, here's Wade created with the red, Black and soft shadow markers from this month's Copic Club selection along with your skin white from our first month!

Enjoy those markers everyone and happy coloring!
